The following guidelines will give you an idea of what will be expected of you as a "mentee":
- Have clear expectations for your relationship with your mentor. Prepare a written list of these expectations for your first meeting so that you can both discuss and compare goals. Be willing to compromise in order to establish common and realistic objectives.
- Take initiative! Being proactive is necessary for both personal and professional success, so develop this skill now with your mentor.
- Have an agenda for your meetings. Keep a written record of questions and issues as they arise and discuss these at your meetings.
- Be open to advice and constructive criticism. Trust that your mentor, whose wisdom comes from years of experience, has your best interests in mind.
- Keep a journal to record memorable experiences as well as to state your hopes, concerns, etc.
This will be valuable in examining the progress of your goals as well as tracking the development of your relationship with your mentor. The journal will be submitted to the college at the end of each academic year.
