Year One

May: Inaugural Event
An inaugural event is held before you enter your junior year. This is an opportunity for you to meet your mentor and begin to establish goals and objectives. You will also be awarded your stipend at this time.

June: Initial Meeting
During the initial meeting, you and your mentor should establish a foundation for your relationship and explore goals. Your agenda for this first meeting should include:

  • Sharing your backgrounds; Discuss where you grew up, your experiences at Queens College, your interests, your hopes for your career, etc.
  • Establishing how you will communicate with each other; What forms of communication will work best? How and when will you meet? Should calls be made during work hours or only afterward? Try to arrange several meetings in advance.
  • Discussing possible meeting venues; It is probably best to meet away from your mentor's office to avoid work-related distractions. A coffee shop or diner may be a good choice.
  • Outlining your goals and planning on how to achieve these over the course of the program. Determine a way to assess these goals.
June - August: Summer Experience
Meet at least monthly. Try to attend professional cultural and educational events together (plays, museums, formal luncheons/dinners, etc.). Be sure to suggest to your mentor possible outings that interest you. This is a good opportunity for you to gain a broader perspective of the lifestyle of New York City professionals.

September - May: Academic Year
During the academic year it may be difficult to meet in person, but do meet at least twice a semester. Stay in contact via phone or email. This year's goal is to find an internship for the summer. The mentor will play a major role in obtaining the internship (it does not have to be in the mentor's field).
