The CUNY Proficiency Exam

The CUNY Proficiency Exam assesses a student’s competence in various areas of academic comprehension, which is considered important for a student’s success later on in their academic careers. The CPE explores a students’ ability to understand and think critically about ideas and information presented in print, as well as a students’ ability to write clearly, logically and correctly. As of the fall 2003 semester, all enrolled CUNY students must pass the CUNY Proficiency Exam by the time they reach their 60th credit. Students who are transferring from outside the CUNY system with 45 credits or more are required to take the CPE their first semester. Students transferring within the CUNY system with more than 45 credits should have taken the CPE at least once before transferring. The CPE is offered at least once during each semester, usually in March and October. Students should receive notification to take the CPE exam. Students who did not receive notification should immediately visit the Testing Center at Kiely Hall, Room 232 to register for their testing dates. By missing an exam, you forfeit one of your chances to take the CPE. Students have three opportunities to pass the CPE and if necessary may appeal for a fourth attempt. Students must also be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 and higher to take the CPE.
