In BALA, our business is students. Our handbook and guide to the program was originally designed, written and edited by BALA students, for BALA students. BALA is student centered.
BALA is a program in which to exercise your powers of analysis and imagination. It is where you learn to link the liberal arts and business applications, your major and your career. BALA also provides the opportunity to network; to make friends and business connections that can last a lifetime.
BALA is more than the sum of its parts; it provides a social and intellectual space within our commuter campus. Getting involved means getting to know other BALA students, meeting members of the BALA Advisory Board, volunteering for committees and immersing yourself in your educational experience.
Business and Liberal Arts (BALA) is a rigorous, interdisciplinary minor for the liberal arts major.
BALA recognizes the business community's need for broadly educated, articulate college graduates from the highly diversified New York population. Conceived in response to the results of a corporate survey undertaken by the Queens College Corporate Advisory Board in 1986, BALA is designed to help students build bridges between liberal arts and business. Study of the liberal arts and performance in the corporate world both depend on the ability to communicate in person and on paper, to analyze and solve problems, and to share ideas with others. Consistent with the tradition of the liberal arts, BALA marries the study of the arts and sciences with carefully selected exposure to basic business disciplines.
Over 1,500 human resource executives were surveyed to identify those qualities and skills critical to success in the business world. The results of this survey were used to establish the BALA curriculum, which offers a series of unique courses designed to connect study in the traditional liberal arts with a business career. Students select one of the 66 academic majors offered at Queens College and complete BALA courses as part of the total credits required for graduation.
