All BALA Courses stress critial thinking, effective writing and speaking, ethical decision making, and teamwork. Faculty are selected for their academic excellence and familiarity with the business world.
Courses

First-Level Courses

.: BALA 100 ~ Introductory Seminar   Students meet in small groups to explore the meaning of the terms liberal arts, work, and business, and the connections among these concepts.

.: Computer Science 018 ~ Computer Applications for Business   Fundamentals of using the operating system and application software. Business-oriented uses of software applications including: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database management. Emphasis on realistic situations and problem solving strategies used in business. An important part of the course is creating and delivering a Powerpoint presentation using a laptop computer and a projector. (Both of which will be provided in class) This course meets SQ LASAR.

Intermediate Courses

.: English 201W ~ Writing for Business   Intensive practice in writing effectively in a variety of business situations; drafting and revising documents in case-study settings, creating corporate internal communication pieces and developing brochures and press releases.

.: BALA 103W ~ Critical Thinking in Business   This course is intended to introduce students to effective reasoning and give them the tools to apply such reasoning in the business context and throughout their lives. Students will learn how to critically evaluate information presented to them -- to define issues, ask pertinent questions, challenge assumptions, recognize speaker objectives and motivations, analyze arguments, and evaluate evidence -- and will apply this knowledge to real world scenarios.

.: Accounting 100 ~ Financial and Managerial Accounting - Information for Decision Making   Teaches non-accountants to understand pertinent numerical information in personal, public, and corporate situations. Budgeting and financial reasoning.

.: Media Studies 165 ~ Oral Communication in the Workplace   Fundamentals of oral communication in business settings, including interpersonal communications, listening, informative briefings, public presentations, small and large group interaction, and interviewing.

Senior Courses

.: BALA 302W ~ Law and Ethics of Business   Law and Ethics are not mutually exclusive terms. Students will learn to examine situations in the news from legal and ethical perspectives. As employees and future managers, they will be able to consider their own decisions from these vantage points. More important, they will become wary of easy answers to tough questions.

.: BALA 303 ~ Analytical Problem Solving and Decision Making in Business   Rational steps used in problem solving and analytical thinking in practical situations. Including case studies and management games, this course helps students to appreciate the role of intuition, creativity, and imagination in solving problems.

.: BALA 360 ~ Virtual Enterprise   Virtual Enterprises is a cutting edge business simulation that has its roots in Europe. You start a business that will operate within the global VE (Virtual Enterprises) network. You will conceptually start a business, write the plan, pitch venture capitalists for startup funds, work with consultants, and staff all departments (accounting, HR, marketing, and sales). You will trade goods and services with other VE firms all over the world.

.: BALA 398.3 ~ Leadership, Christoph Winkler
Leadership is a skill that is required in both our professional and personal lives. The course begins with a survey of the literature and issues of the modern world. The class then breaks down into consulting teams, each identifying a leadership related problem in their community. The teams will analyze their problem and prepare viable solutions. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be given the opportunity to bring their plans to life through optional, stipended, summer incubator opportunities.

.: BALA 398.3 ~ The Nature of New York, David Rosane
Hidden in the concrete jungle of the city is an often-overlooked ecosystem, the Nature of New York. Students are introduced to this natural environment through media, literature and field trips. Then, armed with their environmental knowledge, the students connect this field to the issues of global business, sustainability and the Green Responsibility of business. In the end, the course brings the realization to students that an area that is typically shunned by business, is really a crucial part of the puzzle.

.: BALA 398.3 ~ Technology Entrepreneurship, Edgar Troudt
Technology has the power to erase national borders and create offices, businesses and collaborations across the world. This course explores the creation of a technology development firm. It starts with a review of modern issues and the various sub-areas of the tech industry through article readings. Then, students are divided into teams that work to research and design their own company. At the conclusion of the course students should have an understanding of: modern technology issues and the vocabulary used to discuss them, how to put together a technology enterprise, and what soft skills are needed to succeed.
