In line with the dictum of 20th century evolutionist/genetecist, Theodosious Dobzhansky, that "nothing in biology makes sense except the light of evolution", Bio.025 explores evolutionary principles as a means of understanding diverse life forms, including humanity itself. The course is presented from a self-aware perspective, investigating the capacity for complex thought and the advent of human culture as facets of an increasingly complex brain. Students examine evolutionary theory through readings in the text, Biology, Evolution and Human Nature, Darwin's book, The Origin of Species, and class discussions.

This course will fulfill the Natural Science (NS) or the Natural Science Laboratory (NS-L) requirements for the Perspective on the Liberal Arts and Sciences (PLAS). Perspectives courses target foundations of knowledge, and are therefore taken by students early on in their undergraduate experience, before they complete 60 credits. It also counts towards the 120 credits required for a B.A degree.
This course is the first part of a two-semester sequence that will provide students with a real genomics research experience. In this course, students will isolate, name and characterize new bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) from soil samples collected in the field. Bacteriophage DNA will be purified and analyzed. Several phages will be selected for whole genome sequencing using next-generation sequencing technology. During the second semester of this course, the genomes of phages obtained from the wild will be analyzed with bioinformatic tools and compared with those of phages isolated at other locations. The research goals of these courses will be to analyze the genomes of bacteriophage isolated from the wild (soil), identify new bacteriophage species and incorporate them into a comparative genomic study sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education Alliance to better understand the genetic organization and evolution of these organisms.

Only open to students who have complete 105 with a C- or better.Biology 106 explores the subjects of ecology, evolution and biodiversity. After introducing the Earth as the ecological theater upon which the evolutionary play will transpire, the origins of living things and their evolutionary history on Earth, along with the transmission of hereditary characteristics are reviewed. The survey of biodiversity then encompasses about half the course’s lectures. Because of the breadth of these topics, we will follow the text both in order of presentation and the system of classification used. There are however, inserted sidelights and the presentation of current research efforts to expand on the traditional survey. The analysis of biodiversity is followed by a nine-lecture introduction to evolution and ecology, disciplines in which the integration of ideas, processes and examples are inseparable. The laboratory component of the course is coordinated with the lectures and involves the examination of preserved and living specimens along with several dissections designed to enhance the development of your dissection skills as well as understanding the characteristics and evolutionary relationships of the specimens. A self-scheduled visit to the American Museum of Natural history is related to a second laboratory essay assignment.

The main focus is to provide an understanding of some of the principles underlying the functions of the nervous system while comprehending certain experimental procedures that have lead to this knowledge. In the first part of the course, the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the activity of individual neurons will be discussed. Then, based on model systems, with emphasis on the visual system, we will examine how neurons are assembled in networks to give rise to functional systems. Finally, topics related to the development, maintenance, and plasticity of these networks will be covered.
