Over the years, research in the Baker group has encompassed an eclectic mix, ranging from applications of spectroscopic techniques (mainly photoelectron spectroscopy) to organic synthesis and mechanisms, photophysics of coordination compounds, and  DNA intercalation phenomena (see Publication list for specifics).

For the 2008-2009 academic year, I was granted a sabbatical leave, and decided to move into another new area – fundamental studies of crystalline ionic and molecular materials using computational methods. This work is in collaboration with Prof. Mark Baker of the University of Guelph in Canada. It has already produced novel results, and two manuscripts are under review as of Dec 2008. Links will be posted here when the articles are published.

.

They describe a new and simpler method for computing Madelung constants, and a detailed study as to how Madelung Constants  evolve for ions at various sites in crystals (edges, corners, face centers, body centers, etc.)  en route  from nanostructures to bulk structures. Ongoing work involves applications of this methodology to a range of crystal types, and to molecular solids such as C60.

The figure shows a color –coded “map” of  the Madelung Constants for an uncharged zinc blende nanostructure containing 136 ions.
