Thomas J. Hayden III Lecture Demonstration Show
The Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry at Queens College offered the eighth edition of the Lecture
Demonstration show in honor of our former colleague Thomas J. Hayden. Tom was
the Director of Laboratories for the Department and a Chief College Laboratory
Technician. He served the College and the Department for 40 years. One of his
most important legacies was his love of and skill in presenting lecture
demonstrations to our undergraduate classes, and the yearly Holiday show he
spearheaded during his years here. Upon Tom's passing the Department has revived
the show and will continue it yearly in his memory. Remsen 101, the lecture hall
where the show is given, has been renamed in Tom's honor.
The January 2006 show was attended by more than 800 students from several local
schools including John Adams HS,
Francis Lewis HS , Hillcrest HS, John Bowne HS and Townsend Harris HS. Mr. Tom Sangiorgi, chemistry teacher from Townsend Harris HS and a QC alumni has
participated in the show since the beginning. Dr. Harry Gafney was our moderator
and Dr. Tom Strekas, Dr. Dave Baker and Mr. Tom Sangiorgi of Townsend Harris HS,
performed the demos. Mr. Randolph Smith-Chief College Laboratory Technician and
Director of Laboratories, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Queens
College-CUNY returned from his retirement to prepare the demos and help run the
show. Thanks Randy ! Photographs were taken by Nancy Bareis of Queens College.
Additional photos and page editing performed by Dr. Gopal Subramaniam.
