Primary College Competencies
• English 110 and 3 writing intensive courses with a B average or better in each course.
• Math 119, a pre-requisite for the EECE major, fulfills PCC in mathematics
• Foreign Language – The equivalent of 3 semesters of college level Foreign Language (or exemptions) are required for QC graduation; students must have completed at least 2 of 3 semesters prior to admission to EECE professional sequence.
• Physical Education (FNES 11-30) required prior to QC graduation.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Area Requirements (LASAR) or Perspectives on the Liberal Arts and Sciences (PLAS)
All students at Queens College are required to fulfill the College Liberal Arts and Sciences Area Requirements (LASAR) or Perspectives on the Liberal Arts and Sciences (PLAS) depending on their semester of matriculation at QC. Students who are interested in obtaining NYS Initial Certification in Childhood Education 1-6 must select LASAR/PLAS courses that correspond to the NYS learning standards for elementary school teachers. Students must also complete additional liberal arts courses to fulfill these NYS requirements. See the EECE LASAR or PLAS worksheet for courses that fulfill NYS and EECE requirements. *LASAR or PLAS courses may not be taken with the P/NC option; no grade lower than C will be accepted.

Liberal Arts and Science Co-Major
Students are required to co-major in a liberal arts and science department or program of no fewer than 30 credits. Majors such as accounting, business administration, fashion merchandising or design, physical education, music education, or any other education certification program are not acceptable as co-majors.

Pre-requisite Elementary Education Courses
Students are required to take the following classes prior to admission to the NY State Initial Certificate Program.
• EECE 201 - Schooling in Diverse Communities
• EECE 310 - Children in Cultural Contexts I: Child Development
• EECE 340 - The Early Development of Language and Literacy

Other requirements for admission to the program
• Cumulative GPA of 2.75 (including courses at QC and any courses transferred from other institutions)
• Grade of B in at least 1 course in each of the NYS core areas: Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts
• Documentation of 100 hours of experience with children.
• No more than 9 credits remaining outside of the EECE Professional Sequence

Professional Course Sequence
• Semester 1: EECE 311, EECE 341; Up to 9 credits of remaining coursework
• Semester 2: EECE 350, EECE 351, EECE 352, EECE 360
• Semester 3: EECE 361, EECE 399, EECE 220

To continue in the program, students are required to
• Maintain a B average in EECE courses, with no grade lower than C in any course within the program.
• Maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.75.
• Develop a portfolio (with faculty guidance) that represents their development in writing and professional skills.

Initial Certification: To be eligible for NYS initial certification in Childhood 1-6, students must
• Complete the courses, practicum, and portfolio requirements of the Childhood 1-6 Initial Certificate Program
• Complete a co-major in the liberal arts and sciences
• Fulfill all Queens College requirements for graduation
• Complete state-approved seminars on child abuse, maltreatment, and abduction; substance abuse; school violence; safety education; fire and arson prevention
• Pass the NYS Certification Exams: Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), the Elementary version of the Assessment of Teaching Skills (ATSW), and the Content Specialty Test (CST).
