What
is FNES?
FNES (pronounced as "finesse")
is the acronym for the Department of Family, Nutrition, & Exercise
Sciences at Queens College. FNES is an interdisciplinary department that
brings together people who study family and consumer sciences, textiles
and apparel, nutrition, dietetics, physical education, and exercise science.
This includes, but is not limited to, individuals preparing to become
teachers of family and consumer sciences and physical education.

What
is "family and consumer sciences"?
Family and consumer sciences is a discipline of study that synthesizes
knowledge from (1) the physical sciences, (2) the social sciences, and
(3) the humanities and applies this knowledge to an interdisciplinary
study of various aspects of individual and family life. The profession
of family and consumer sciences is dedicated to enhancing the relationships
among individuals, families, and communities and the environments in which
they function. Family and consumer scientists take leadership in: improving
individual, family, and community well-being; impacting the development,
delivery, and evaluation of consumer goods and services; influencing the
creation of policy; and shaping societal change, thereby enhancing the
human condition. These professionals are employed in such diverse areas
as dietetics and nutrition, food service, teaching, business and industry,
consumer and social welfare, extension, merchandising, fashion and textiles,
research, and communications. For more information, go to the homepage
of the American
Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Go to the FNES
Academics page for information on our programs.

What
is "exercise science"?
Exercise science is the study of physiological and functional adaptations
to human movement. This ranges from basic scientific study of the effects
of physical activity on human physiology to applied aspects of health
and human performance. Academic programs at FNES provide for intensive
study in the interrelated disciplines of nutrition and exercise science.
Programs are designed for students who wish to specialize in the maintenance
of cardiovascular health and wellness through healthy diets and regular
physical activity. Students are prepared for positions in corporate and
hospital based programs in health, cardiovascular fitness, wellness, and
cardiac rehabilitation; community based programs in nutrition and fitness
for adults and senior citizens; and adult health and fitness programs
in health clubs, adult education centers, sports medicine clinics, physical
rehabilitation centers, and preventive health agencies. Undergraduate
study in exercise science synthesizes knowledge from biology, chemistry,
anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, exercise physiology, and
exercise programming. Graduate study in exercise science typically provides
systematic study in specific areas of exercise physiology with an emphasis
on research. Click here for more information on careers
in exercise science (86k.pdf file*). For more information, go to the
homepage of the American
College of Sports Medicine, the premier international organization
for exercise science and sports medicine students and professionals. Please
go to the FNES Academics page
for information on our programs.

What happened to
the Home Economics Department?
What happened to the Department of Health & Physical Education?
In a re-organization of departments at Queens College, the old
departments of Home Economics and Health & Physical Education were
merged to become the Department of Family, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences
(FNES). While maintaining the programs of the previous departments, the
merger has provided unique opportunities to develop programs in the interrelated
disciplines of nutrition and exercise sciences. In short, this has created
research and programmatic opportunities that were not feasible prior to
the merger.

Where is the FNES
Main Office?
Since FNES is such a diverse department, there is no single "Main
Office". Instead, there are two program offices. The Family and Consumer
Sciences Program Office is located in Remsen Hall room 306 (this office
serves programs in family and consumer
sciences, textiles and apparel, nutrition, and dietetics). The Exercise
Science and Physical Education Program Office is located in Fitzgerald
Gymnasium room 203.
