A CAREER AS A DIETITIAN

A. What is ADA ?

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) is the national professional organization of dietitians and nutritionists

B. What is a Registered Dietitian?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a person who has

1) completed the Didactic Program in Dietetics
2) completed a Dietetic Internship
3) passed the Registerd Dietitian Exam

1. DIDACTIC PROGRAM IN DIETETICS (DPD)

a) completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics with a grade of C or better in all courses listed on page 1.
b) a minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree.

A Verification Statement will be issued at the completion of a and b, which is in effect for 5 years.

2. DIETETIC INTERNSHIP (DI)

A Dietetic Internship (DI) is a post-baccalaureate supervised learning experience of at least 900 practice hours. These are highly competitive and field work is suggested. Go to the ADA website www.eatright.org for a list of all of the DIs in the USA.

3. REGISTERED DIETITIAN (RD)

After completion of the DPD and DI, you may apply to take the national registration examination from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). When you pass the examination you may then use the initials RD after your name. Once you pass the Registration Examination you may also apply to the NY State Education Department for Certification as a Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN).

Is it necessary to be Registered?

Jobs can be obtained by persons who are not registered, but they are more difficult to find - the salary level is lower and the chances of advancement are less.

C. What are the steps to ADA membership?

l. As a full time student you may become a student member.(See posters in FNES Office and get application form. Check off DPD for type of program.) Membership is June 1 to May 31.

2.When you have completed both the academic (DPD) and practice requirements (DI), or academic requirements and a Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university, you are eligible for active membership.
