20 Years of Promoting Heart Health……….

PATH is a unique school-based program of personal wellness that integrates vigorous exercise, heart health knowledge and behavior modification. From testing approximately 2000 teenagers in PATH we have learned that heart disease risk factors and poor health behaviors are prevalent at an early age and, if left uncontrolled, may be precursors to the onset of atherosclerosis as adults. PATH is designed to meet the need for early intervention.

The following goals of PATH  specifically address recommendations of the United States Surgeon General, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Healthy People 2010 and the New York State Learning Standards.

♥      improved health and fitness that persists into adult life

♥      enhanced basic skills acquisition including reading, writing, mathematics,

                          listening, and verbalizing

understanding the concepts of personal wellness

♥      knowing how to design a personalized program of health and fitness

♥      improving awareness of career opportunities in health and fitness

The following benefits have been observed from PATH intervention: 1) increased heart health knowledge, 2) improved diet and physical activity habits, 3) decreased cholesterol and body fat, 4) increased cardiovascular fitness, 5) decreased blood pressure, 6) greater time- on- task and better attendance compared to traditional physical education. The findings have been published in professional journals and presented at scientific and clinical meetings.

Since 1993 PATH has been introduced to approximately 50 middle and high schools, reaching close to 50,000 students. PATH has been commended by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the New York State Department of Health, and the Greater New York Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). In 1995 the national organization of ACSM awarded PATH as the outstanding program in the country at meeting objectives of Healthy People 2000.
