- THE
INTERNSHIP
-
The Internship in Dietetics at Queens College offers the intern
the opportunity to acquire the essential knowledge and skills
for a position as an entry-level dietitian. Interns are placed
in a variety of local facilities to enhance their skills in
the practice of dietetics. The curriculum is based on the
Standards of Education of the American Dietetic Association.
Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will
be eligible to sit for the Dietetic Registration Examination,
administered by The Commission on Dietetic Registration. The
program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for
Dietetic Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.
- PROGRAM
MISSION
To prepare entry level dietetics practitioners
in a manner that promotes flexibility and innovation in the
increasingly global society.
- THE
PROGRAM
-
Each student will be required to work in one or more facilities
assigned by the Queens College Program Director, to successfully
complete a minimum of 900 hours of experience. Students must
work full-time or a minimum of twenty hours per week in the
assigned facility, and will be required to gain experience
in all areas of dietetics: clinical, community, and management.
Each new class will enter at the start of the Fall semester.
Twelve credit hours will be assigned to the Dietetic Internship,
which includes a seminar on campus.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
-
VERIFICATION
of Plan DPD from a program approved by the Commission
on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of The American
Dietetic Association.
MINIMUM 3.0 GPA in undergraduate/graduate work to enter the
program.
MATRICULATED STATUS in the Family,
Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences (FNES) Graduate Program.
(To matriculate in the FNES Graduate Program, apply directly
to the Graduate Admissions Office, Jefferson Hall, Room 105,
Queens College, 65-30 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11367.

Matriculation
in the FNES graduate program does not guarantee admission
to the Dietetic Internship
- ENROLLMENT
-
The intern will enroll for a 12 credit hour internship. If
the intern has not completed at least nine graduate credits
at Queens College he/she, in addition to the internship, must
enroll in:
-
3 credit hours of FNES 767 Advanced Diet
Therapy or its equivalent (Fall semester)
3 additional credit hours in a graduate
course in the FNES Master's Program approved by the Director
(Spring semester)
At the conclusion of the internship experience,
the intern may be able to apply a total of 6 internship credits
and will be able to apply any additional course credits if enrolled in the nutrition specialization earned
toward the Master's Degree in Nutrition & Exercise, Nutrition Specialization (329 NU) only.
TUITION AND APPLICATION DEADLINE
-
The internship costs the equivalent of twelve graduate credits
plus related fees and insurance. The deadline for filing the
application, which must include the $35.00 application fee,
is February 15.
COMPUTER MATCHING
-
Queens College participates in Computer Matching. Applicants
should request instructions and a mark/sense card to prioritize
their preferences from any ADA approved Didactic Program in
Dietetics (DPD) or from D&D Digital Systems (304 Main
Street, Suite 301, Ames, IA 50010-6148). www.dnddigital.com.
Make the request early enough to allow time for submission
by the February deadline. There is a fee for computer matching
that is due with the applicant's preference card.

Dear
Prospective Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in the Queens College Dietetic Internship. INFORMATION ABOUT GRADUATE PROGRAMS IS ON A SEPARATE SHEET AND
IN THE ATTACHED BROCHURE.
Current
tuition in the graduate school is $270.00 per credit for New York
State residents and $500.00 per credit for out of state residents.
Students must also pay other fees, which are approximately $111.60.
Students must purchase student professional malpractice insurance
through Maginnis (applications will be sent upon admission to
the program) and must maintain individual health insurance (may
be done through the college’s student policy).
APPLICATION
PROCEDURE
The completed packet for internship must be postmarked by
February 15, 2008 for notification of September, 2008 appointment.
Send application materials to: Susan P. Braverman, MS, RD, CDN,
FADA, Dietetic Internship Director at the above address.
Application
Packet must contain the following:
1.
Completed and signed internship application, which
is the standard ADA form. (Computerized form is acceptable.)
2.
A type written letter of application describing your interest
in this program and your long and short term professional
goals.
3.
Completed Declaration of Intent Form signed by
the Program Director of the CADE (ADA) approved Didactic
Program in Dietetics (DPD) in which you are currently enrolled. If you have already graduated, an original Verification
of Completion Form is required.
4.
Official academic transcripts from each
college or university attended.
5.
Two recommendations from professional persons, who are
qualified to give information as to your ability and professional
qualifications. One must be from a member of the nutrition
faculty. The other should be from an employer, where possible,
or another faculty member. Recommendations must be written
on forms provided by Queens College or standard ADA forms. They must be in individually sealed envelopes and may be sent
separately, but not after the February 15th postmark
deadline. Recommender’s signatures should be written across
the sealed envelope flap
6.
Applicants who have obtained their education outside
the United States and its territories must have their academic
degrees validated by World Education Services and obtain a Verification
of Completion Form signed by a Program Director of a CAADE/ADA
accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
7.
All applicants to Dietetic Internships must participate
in computer matching through D&D Digital Systems. (See brochure for further details)
8.

INFORMATION REGARDING MASTER'S DEGREE
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY
1. The
Dietetic Internship is part of the Master’s program. No one
can start the internship unless he/she is fully matriculated
in the graduate program. This applies to you, whether
or not you have an advanced degree.
2. You must apply separately to the graduate program.
For

write to Graduate Admissions Office, which is located in Jefferson
Hall, Room 105, Queens College, 65-30 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing,
NY 11367.
You

3. The
MS degree within the department is a 36 credit degree
in Nutrition and Exercise Sciences (code # 329). You should
choose one of the three emphases within this degree. If
you choose the NU (Nutrition) emphasis, six of the twelve internship
credits may be used to satisfy your degree requirements. If
you choose the NE (Nutrition and Exercise) emphasis or the ES
(Exercise Science) emphasis, your internship credits will not
be able to be used to satisfy the degree requirements.
