According to a New York State United Teachers poll published on April
19, 2000, public schools will need to fill more than 100,000
teaching positions by the year 2005. A study published in the Journal
of Family and Consumer Sciences further indicated that given the
forecast of vacant positions that will result from retirement
alone, and assuming that the number of students with degrees in family
and consumer sciences education do actually teach, it is expected
that over the next five years, a minimum of 6,976 or 77% of all
family and consumer sciences teaching positions cannot be filled.
Graduates of the Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education program
are certified to teach grades K-12 in New York State. Currently,
most of the teaching positions exist in grades 6 through 12.
In New York State, the Home and Career Skills curriculum (grades 5-8)
is mandated and all students must complete a 3/4 unit (81 hours)
of instruction by the end of the eighth grade. The curriculum consists
of four modules of study that focus on developing creative thinking
skills in decision-making, problem solving, and the management
process. Middle school teachers use applied activities to cover
topics such as food, nutrition, personal development, consumer issues,
personal finance, clothing and personal environmental management,
careers, and entrepreneurship. The goal of the curriculum is
to help students gain the knowledge and skills that empower them to
live in a society of constant change and to improve their quality
of life by preparing them to meet their present and future responsibilities
as family members, wage earners, consumers, and citizens of a global
society.

- High school teachers
cover such subject areas as foods and nutrition, human development,
clothing and textiles, and housing and the environment. For example,
some courses offered by Family and Consumer Sciences high school
departments include, gourmet cooking, cultural foods, nutrition,
health and fitness, parenting, marriage, child development, early
childhood education, adolescent psychology, gerontology, interior
design, the world of fashion, and clothing and design. A recently
enacted New York State Education department regulation requires that
all high school graduates receive instruction in parenting. Family
and Consumer Sciences is identified as one of the high school programs
responsible for implementation.
