Professor Leo Hershkowitz
Department of History
A good deal of my work centers around the study of and research into New York Jewish History, especially up to the beginning of mass immigrations - The World Before Our Fathers.
I am particularly interested using archival, primary sources such as legal records, wills, inventories, conveyances; material rarely used by scholars in uncovering forgotten history as well as challenging rooted myths.
For example, did settlement begin 1654? Did that date really represent a point of contact not intended as settlement?
I have edited two books for the American Jewish Historical Society including the Letters of Abigail Franks, and contributed to a number of publications as Shalom Goldman Hebrew and the Bible in America. There also have been a number of articles for journals and encyclopedias, including the recent Jewish Women in America.
