Admission to the Communication Sciences & Disorders Major:
Students who wish to become Communication Sciences & Disorders majors (Code 100---Speech Pathology) must formally apply to to be admitted to the major through the LCD Department. Applications may be obtained in the LCD Department office, Kissena 349, or downloaded from the LCD website. To apply, students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (B) and completed at least 24 credits from a regionally accredited college or university. The application packet requires the completed application, transcripts from all colleges attended, and an essay. This must be submitted to the LCD office by a specific due date.
Students will be admitted into the major several times a year, as seats allow. Transfer students must be accepted into the college before applying for the major. QC admission and application to become a 100 Speech Pathology major may be done the semester before matriculation at Queens College.
Students who qualify for admission go through a competitive review, as there is limited space available within the major. The number of students admitted to the major each semester is dependent on space availability. Consequently, all qualified students may not be admitted to the major in a given semester. Students may apply again the following semester.

10/14/2008, 12/5/2008, and 1/8/2009 (for Spring semester classes)

Application for Admission to the CSD Major
Retention Requirements in the Major:
There are minimum grade requirements in the 100- and 200-level courses offered in Communication Sciences and Disorders within the LCD Department. Students must get an average (GPA) of 2.6 or better across three introductory courses (LCD 105, 106, 110). Only one of these courses may be retaken one time to achieve this 2.6 average. Students must earn a B- or better in each of three 200-level courses (LCD 207, 208, 216). Only one of these 200-level courses can be retaken one time. Students coming into Queens College with transfer credits for these courses must submit an official transcript showing the grade for that course. Transfer grades must meet the grade requirements for the CSD major, or the course must be retaken. In the case of retakes, the transfer credit will be forfeited for that course.
Professional Preparation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology:
The professional preparation for careers in speech language pathology and audiologist is accomplished exclusively at the graduate level. Students interested in pursuing careers in speech-language pathology or audiology should contact the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) on the internet at http://www.asha.org/students/, and speak with their advisors.
Course requirements in the “Science/Disorders Major”:
First level courses: LCD 105, LCD 106, LCD 110.
Second level courses: LCD 207, LCD 208, LCD 216, LCD 283. (Students may substitute either of the following statistics courses for LCD 283: Soc. 205 or Psych. 107.)
Third level courses: LCD 309, 316, 322, 323, 330.
Related courses: (a) Psychology 214, and (b) one of the following: LCD 120, LCD 130, LCD 205, LCD 206, LCD 209, LCD 391.3, Psych. 221, Psych. 359, Soc. 211.
Science and Mathematics for ASHA Certification: Students who wish to pursue graduate study and obtain clinical certification in Speech-Language pathology or Audiology from the American Speech Language Hearing Association must demonstrate knowledge in the areas of biological and physical sciences, mathematics, and social-behavioral sciences. These requirements can be accomplished by taking courses in each of these four areas at the undergraduate level. However, these courses are not required for completion of the BA or the major, per se. Suggested courses to fulfill ASHA’s physical sciences requirement at Queens College include Chemistry 16, 19 and 113, ENS 111 and 112, Geology 100, 101, 7, 11, 12 and 64; Physics 1, 7 and 121.
Prerequisites in the “Science/Disorders Major”
Students are urged to follow the prerequisite structure indicated here or in handouts provided by the Department. Do not depend on the college bulletin for this information, as this is sometimes outdated.

- LCD 323: Prerequisites: LCD 207 and LCD 216 with a grade in each of B- or above
- LCD 330: Prerequisites: LCD 207 and LCD 208 with a grade in each of B- or above
Graduate study at Queens College includes preparation for NYS certification for Teacher of Children with Speech & Language Disabilities, NYS licensure in speech-language pathology, and national certification in speech-language pathology.
Registering for Courses:
a. Students register into courses via QUASAR. Majors may register for LCD courses in Communication Sciences and Disorders before general registration begins. This will be during the two days of 'departmental preregistration for selected groups' each semester. For further information, see the bulletin board outside of the LCD office, check the NSSLHA Blackboard site, or speak with your advisor.
b. Some courses are offered in Summer Session I, which begins in the first week in June. Because of the short span of time from the end of the spring semester to the beginning of June, grades from your spring semester courses may not be available for proof of prerequisites. If you are confident that you will fulfill the prerequisites, then register for Summer Session I. If you are not sure, then you are running a risk in enrolling for Summer Session I.
Dual Majors and Minors in Linguistics:
Communication Sciences and Disorders students can also major in Linguistics even though we are in the same department. The only restriction is that a given course cannot be used to satisfy both major and minor requirements. A suggested minor in general Linguistics is described below. Students with particular interests may substitute other courses with their advisor’s approval. To receive credit for a minor, students must register the minor with the Registrar’s Office.

** NOTE: LCD 101 fulfills one of the Humanities III LASAR requirements. It is not required for the Communication Sciences and Disorders students, but it is strongly recommended.
Information for Graduating Students:
Students must consult with the Academic Advising office in Kiely 217 (718) 997-5599) the semester before filing their diploma card. The Advising Office will check all LASARS and other college requirements to make sure everything is in order.
Graduating seniors are expected to complete the following procedure at the beginning of the last semester:
a. Make sure all documented information about courses, transfer credits, course substitutions and petitions are on file in the LCD Office.
b. Check your transcript to see that it is complete and accurate.
c. File a diploma card with the Registrar’s Office by its deadline.
