GIVING: Support the Library

Queens College, hailed by former New York Governor George Pataki as the “Jewel of the City University”, is committed to providing a first class education to talented students of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. The College Library supports the liberal arts curriculum and professional studies with print and electronic resources, services, and instruction in information literacy.

Privileges

Like most academic libraries in the U.S. we face many challenges, including:

To meet these challenges the Library depends on private donations from alumnæ, members of the College community, and the community at large.

Anyone who donates $50 or more to the Library is entitled to borrowing privileges for one year. Whether donations are made through the Queens College Foundation (for the Library), the Alumni Office, or within the Library, donors are asked to consult the Library Circulation Desk at 718-997-3702 to receive their borrowing card.

Donors are invited to a special reception in their honor held annually in April, during National Library Week. Donors receive copies of Page Down, the Library Newsletter with updates on services, print collections, electronic resources, and cultural events.

However you choose to support the Library, whether you establish an endowment or donate toward one book, you will become a member of the Queens College Community and will join in the educational process of generations of students.

Cash Donations

For Special Occasions

Holidays, birthdays, retirements and other special events provide great opportunities to honor family or friends with a gift to the Library. A gift in memory of a loved one assures that generations of students and faculty will remember the honoree. We promptly send an acknowledgment to the donor and to the honoree or their family.

You may use a credit card to make an online donation.

For Books

Donate for Books is a lasting way to help the Library acquire books which it cannot purchase from State funds and thereby help generations of students and faculty in their research. It is also a wonderful way to honor or remember a family member, a colleague, or a friend. Donors may choose a subject area for the books they donate. We will insert a special bookplate in each donated book with the name(s) of the donor and the honoree, and promptly acknowledge the gift to both.

A $50 gift entitles the donor to borrowing privileges from the Queens College Library. Please click on and fill out the Donate for Books form and mail it with your check made out to the Queens College Library.

Endowments

An endowment is a permanent gift, “a gift that keeps growing”. Distribution from an endowment supports the area for which it was established. The principle remains intact and only a percentage of the earned income is used annually by the Library.

Endowments, starting at $10,000 can be established to support a library collection in a subject of interest to the donor, a computer laboratory, a classroom, or a service area. Depending on size, endowments are named after their donors or the ones they wish to honor.

Listed below are some of the endowments established by generous Friends of the Queens College Library:

Endowments are needed in other areas: Business, Sociology, Political Science, and other Social Science subjects, Music, Art, and others.

Naming Opportunities

We have many spaces in the award winning library building which can be named in honor of donors or those they wish to honor. There are a variety of unnamed spaces—small ones like faculty carrels and group study rooms, and larger ones such as the electronic classrooms, a Multi-Media Center, and the Art and Music Libraries.

Library spaces listed below have already been named by generous donors:

Gifts in Kind: Donating Books/Collections

Many people acquire fine private collections reflecting their professional interests, travel, research and hobbies. We encourage alums, faculty and members of the community to donate the books that have given them much pleasure to the Queens College Library, so that their treasured volumes will enrich the Library collection and the lives of generations of students and faculty.
