INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES

Instruction Website
This website of tutorials and instruction pages was created primarily for the benefit of English 110 and other first year undergraduate students at Queens College, although all undergraduates and even graduate students are welcome to use this website. Use of this instruction website will help you as you navigate our library's resources and find, select and evaluate information. These skills are referred to as information literacy skills and are important as you progress through Queens College and in your lifelong learning.
Information literacy is “the ability to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (American Libraries Association, 2000).
In this website, we will demonstrate:
- how to choose a topic
- the search process
- our call number system and how materials are arranged in this library
- how to use CUNY+ to find books and other library materials
- the basics of database searching
- how to evaluate the information you find
- how to cite sources
- using information responsibly
This website serves as a complement to the CUNY Information Competency Tutorials (see link on this page) and is customized to our library's resources and methodology. Let us know what you think and visit it often!
Tutorials
A CUNY-wide group of librarians have devised a set of learning modules that take the viewer through the information research process. Practice quizzes at the end of some modules allow the viewer to test their knowledge of key concepts discussed in the modules.
Calendar
A calendar of library instruction sessions is available for consultation. We ask that Queens College faculty please read our guidelines on scheduling a library session for your class.
Classroom Policies
The Library has several teaching spaces to accommodate different size classes and modes of instruction. Faculty who wish to use of these spaces on a limited basis should read first our Classroom Policies.
LIB 100
The Library Faculty instructors teach every semester an undergraduate, 8 week, 1-credit elective course called LIB 100: Information Literacy. Students learn to access and retrieve information using a variety of print and electronic resources.
LIB 150
The Library Faculty instructors teach every semester an undergraduate 2-credit elective course called LIB 150: Fundamentals of Library Research. The topic focus changes each semester, and we offer sections in the Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities.
Tour
Students, faculty, staff, and visitors are requested to explore the Library website on their own, with its explanatory text and Maps in order to learn about our services and collections. When a group tour is preferred, the Library will arrange it upon request of an instructor or coordinator.
Instructional Services Office (RO 224) is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm.
