COMPUTING

Connect from Home to QC Resources: Proxy Service
The Proxy Service allows QC users to login to the Library's website to access all QC resources (e-books, databases, e-journals, courses reserves, etc.) from off-campus.
1. Activate ADS Account
- Students
- Students must activate their Active Directory Services (ADS) account by logging into the College Account Management System (CAMS) from any student workstation on campus. Registered students need only activate the account once.
Reminder for the CAMS login: The College ID is the social security number, PIN # is the registration PIN/password (for those without a PIN, use the last 6 digits of the social security number), and Postal Code is the zip code. The ADS account will be listed twice, on two separate lines—to activate the account, create the same password for each line.
- Faculty/Staff
- Faculty/Staff can apply for an ADS account by submitting a completed Computer Account Request Form in person at the OCT Help Desk (Dining Hall, Rm. 150).
2. Configure Browser Settings
Users must configure their web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) following the instructions on the Proxy Service website.
After you configure the Proxy settings, if you try to use a database from home and get a pop-up box that asks you to login with your ADS account information, login by using the appropriate pattern below.
If you are a student or faculty, it should look something like this:
- Username: instr\gbush100
- Password: ***********
If you are staff, it should look something like this:
- Username: qc\bclinton
- Password: ***********
For questions about ADS accounts or the Proxy Service contact the OCT Help Desk (Dining Hall, Rm. 150, 718-997-4444).
Connect from Home to CUNY Resources: Library Barcode
Alternative access to just CUNY databases is available to users with a current valid QC ID card.
- Step 1
- Users must take a current valid QC ID card to the Circulation Desk in Rosenthal Library to activate the library barcode.
- Step 2
- Users login to CUNY's E-Journals & Reference Databases with the library barcode.
The CUNY E-Journals & Reference Databases page does NOT include resources exclusively subscribed to by QC, which is the majority of those on our Databases page.
Services to Students with Disabilities
The Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library, completed in 1988, is an architecturally barrier-free facility: rampways, quad handled doors, and one punch-pad door promote easy access to the building. Elevators to all levels and wide main aisles give access to all six floors. Wheelchair accessible photocopiers, rest rooms, water fountains, and telephones further facilitate full use of the building for all patrons.
Where needed, materials may be paged from the main floor circulation desk. The Queens College Libraries cooperate closely with the campus Office of Special Services for Students with Disabilities. Individual tours can be arranged for students registered with this Office.

Library Laptops for Loan to QC Students
Rosenthal Library has purchased laptop computers with funds made available through the CUNY/QC student technology fee. These laptops are equipped with wireless network cards for use wherever the campus wireless network exists. Wireless is available throughout the Library and much of campus. See map of coverage areas.
The laptops have Windows XP and MS Office Professional Suite of programs. QC students can use the laptops for word processing and other MS Office functions, accessing Library databases, and accessing the Internet. Accessing Library databases or the Internet require a QC computer account. The laptops may be charged out at the Service Desk on Level Two of Rosenthal Library.
Only currently enrolled students with no holds on their library records are allowed to charge out a laptop. Laptop loan policies are also available at the Level 1 Service Desk in the Multimedia Commons and at the Level 3 Information Desk.
Who May Borrow
Queens College students, with a currently validated QC ID and a library barcode, may borrow laptops if there are no outstanding fines or overdue books on your record.
Laptops can be borrowed from the Multimedia Commons Service Desk on Level 1 for use inside and outside Rosenthal Library.
At the time the laptop is checked out you will be asked to complete and sign a Loan Liability Agreement accepting responsibility for loss or damage to the computer and the constituent parts while the laptop is charged out to you. Please allow at least ten minutes to check out the computer and sign the agreement. At the time of checkout, the laptop will be turned on so that you can see it is issued to you in good working condition.
Loan Periods
- Laptops can be borrowed for a five-hour period.
- A sub-set of these wireless laptops are available for a seven to twenty-one day loan period to the graduate level students only.
- Laptops are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Only one laptop will be charged out per user.
- Laptops will not be renewed if there are no other laptops available for loan at the time. Because there is a multiple hour battery recharging time, laptops may be on hand but not available for loan.
- It is not possible to reserve a laptop for a specific time.
- All laptops are due back one hour and a half (1½) before the Service Desk closes (e.g., if you charge out a computer at 6pm it will be charged out for three hours on an evening that the Service Desk closes at 10pm).
- The last check out time is two (2) hours before the library closes. This is a one-hour loan.
- Click here for library hours.
- All computers are due back one hour and a half (1½) before the Service Desk closes.
Returns
All laptops must be returned in person to a Service Desk staff member on Level 1. Do not put laptops in the bookdrop. Do not leave them on the Level 1 Service Desk or at any other library service desk.
At the time of check-in a Library staff member inventory all the physical components (external drives, battery, mouse, etc.). You will be notified if there are any problems with a laptop you return.
Be sure to save your work to your floppy/CD and remove your floppy disk/CD before returning the laptop. All documents or files saved on the hard drive of the laptop will be erased when the laptop is returned.
Overdue fines and replacement/damage fees
- Overdue fines are ($30.00) per hour or any portion of an hour.
- Borrower is responsible for the replacement costs of the laptop if it is lost or stolen. The replacement cost as of Summer 2004 is $1455.
- Borrower is responsible for all repair costs if the laptop or its components are damaged or made inoperable while the laptop is checked out to the borrower.
Security
- Do not leave the laptop unattended. You are responsible for the loss, theft and/or damage of the laptop while it is checked out to you.
- Laptops have BRL/QC identification numbers on them and have been listed with the 107th Precinct, NYPD.
- You will be given a copy of your dated loan agreement. You must show it to a Security Guard when you leave the Library. Otherwise, you will be detained.
