Cold shooting and a late Bentley surge spelled trouble for the eighth seeded Knights in a 85-68 season-ending loss in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Northeast regionals on Saturday in Waltham, MA. NYCAC Champion Queens ends the 2004-05 season with 22 wins, the highest single season total in the 67 year history of the program.
Senior John Sikiric, in his last game wearing QC's navy and silver, led his gutsy squad with 20 points.
A Patrice Thevenot free throw, which followed three pointers by Sikiric and Lance Hazel, had the Knights sniffing at the Falcons talons at 62-58 with 7:32 remaining in the second half. This was the closest Queens had been since they lead 2-0 in the game's opening minute. Bentley then put together an 11-0 run to open up a 15 point lead, a margin Queens could not overcome as they shot only 7 for 33 from the field - including a mind-boggling 2 for 19 from two point range - in the second half.
Senior Patrice Thevenot added 11 points and nine boards while Hazel scored 10 points and NYCAC Rookie of the Year Clyde Chapman pulled down a game high 12 rebounds in the defeat.
With his 20 points, Sikiric finishes his stellar Queens College with 1670 points - good for fourth on the all-time list. He also completed 2004-05 with 611 points, a new single season Knights record. His four rebounds on the night give him 517 in his 95 games at QC, good for 16th on the all-time rebounding roster. Knights head coach Kyrk Peponakis said of Sikiric, "He's the most professional player we've ever had. He's led us from day one and carried us to where we are."

Tournament MVP John Sikiric led all scorers with 29 points as the Knights captured the 2005 NYCAC Men's Basketball Championship by defeating Philadelphia University, 82-74, on Sunday afternoon in Pratt Center on the campus of C.W. Post. As NYCAC Champions, Queens receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Northeast Regionals where they will face the host team, Bentley College on Saturday, March 12th. This is the Knights second NYCAC championship in four years and their third NCAA bid in the last five years.
The tempo was frantic and the play was flawless throughout as both teams pushed the ball up the court. Sikiric took charge immediately for Queens by connecting on his first six shots from the field, all from three point range. Despite Sikiric's explosion - 22 first half points - the Knights only led by one at the break, 45-44.
The second half began no differently than it's predecessor as both teams took turns with the lead. Queens took their biggest lead of the game at 72-66 with about eight minutes remaining but three pointers by Philly's D.J. Fritz and Tayron Thomas knotted the score once again. Another Thomas basket at the 4:15 mark matched one by Sikiric 15 seconds earlier leaving the score knotted at 74 before Hassan Washington (19 points, 4 assists) scored inside to give the Knights the lead for good with 4:08 left in the contest. Bradd Wierzbicki followed with a drive to the hole to put Queens up by four with 1:59 left on the clock. Washington then closed out the scoring with four free throws in the last 31.7 seconds and the celebration was on for QC.
Shaun Bertin was also named to the all-tournament team for the Knights.

Hassan Washington converted on both ends of a one and one with 11.1 seconds left in the game to give the Knights their winning margin in a 58-55 victory over New Haven in the NYCAC semifinals on Saturday at C.W. Post. The Knights move on to face Philadelphia University on Sunday in their first appearance in the NYCAC finals since 2002. Philadelphia advanced to the finals by beating the host school, C.W. Post, 79-66, earlier in the day.
It looked as if it would be an easy night for Queens when they used pressure defense to hold New Haven off of the scoreboard for the first 5:29 of the game while, in the process, building a nine point lead. The lead grew to 14 when Anthony Mauceri connected from behind the three point line with 7:02 left in the opening stanza. However, Queens went on to score only one point, a Shaun Bertin free throw with 1:43 left, the rest of the way and took a precarious 28-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Bertin eventually ended a 7 minute and 45 second Knights drought without a field goal when he connected from in the paint 43 seconds into the second half. That basket would account for two of only five Queens points over a 15 minute span and, when Jamaal Brooks hit a jumper with 12:36 remaining, the Chargers had their first lead of the game at 34-32. That lead grew to as many as seven and, with just over seven minutes left, New Haven held a 47-42 lead. That's when the Knights first all-NYCAC forward John Sikiric took over. Sikiric hit two straight threes to give Queens a 48-47 lead at the 6:21 mark and, when Lance Hazel hit another bomb, QC had completed a 9-0 run and led 51-47 with 5:54 left on the clock.
Typically, New Haven did not quit, answering the Knights nine point run with a seven point run of their own, wresting the lead from Queens once again at 54-51. With 2:11 left, John Sullivan gave UNH that lead, but once again Sikiric answered back. First John cut the deficit to one at the 1:45 mark and then, with 1:09 remaining, Sikiric hit a three pointer with a Charger defender in his face to give QC the lead for good at 56-54. Jamaal Brooks missed his first free throw attempt before making the second with 12.6 seconds remaining, setting up Washington's game clinching free throws.
Sikiric led the Knights with 19 points,
four assists and three steals while Sullivan
had 17 points and 14 boards for New Haven.

Shaun Bertin's lay-up off with 2.2 seconds left in overtime off of a nice feed from Hassan Washington gave the Knights a come-from-behind 88-86 victory over New York Tech in the NYCAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday night in Flushing. The Knights advance to the semifinals where they will now face the eighth seeded Chargers from New Haven, who upset top seeded Adelphi.
New York Tech used a 17-0 run to open up a 41-23 lead late in the opening half and, when Pat Tunstead hit a three early in the second half, the Bears matched their biggest lead of the game at 46-28. John Sikiric then hit a three to cap a 13-0 Queens run to get his team within 5 at 46-41. The Knights took their first lead of the game, 70-69, off of a Lance Hazel three pointer with 4:37 left in regulation but Tech came right back, eventually taking a 77-75 lead before Clyde Chapman scored on a put back with a little over a minute to go to tie the game and send it into overtime.
John Sikiric led five Knights in double figures with 19 points (16 in the second half) while Shaun Bertin added 17 in QC's record setting 20th win of the season. Sikiric now has 1602 career points, moving him past assistant coach Kirk Liddelow and into fourth place on the Queens College all-time scoring list. John also recorded his 500th career rebound, becoming only the 16th Knight to ever do so. Rade Dzambic scored 17 off of the bench while Pat Tunstead and Avery Oliver each had 15 for NYIT, who end the season 16-12.
