Welcome!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Web page of the Department of Secondary Education and Youth Services (SEYS), which is within the Division of Education of Queens College of the City University of New York.  The department provides New York State-approved teacher certification programs in Art, K-12; English, 7-12; Foreign Language, 7-12; Literacy, 5-12; Mathematics, 7-12; Science 7-12; and Social Studies, 7-12.  The department also offers a number of special programs, including TIME 2000, which is a Math-Teaching program, two Teacher Academy programs in mathematics and science, and the Teaching Fellows program.  These programs have been developed in accordance with the conceptual framework of the QueensCollege Education Unit (Equity, Excellence, and Ethics) as well as the guidelines for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

We are committed to providing our teacher candidates with the knowledge, skills, and disposition for working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds in urban public schools.  Our programs are designed for teacher candidates who choose to teach in middle, junior high or high schools.  For the undergraduate initial certification programs, candidates complete a bachelor’s degree in major in which they seek initial certification.  In tandem with the major, teacher candidates complete requirements for a minor in education that include student teaching.  At the graduate level, candidates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the discipline in which they seek a graduate initial certification must take education courses that include student teaching.  Upon completion of these credits, they are granted initial certification.  Candidates who complete our master of science in education programs can obtain an advanced professional certification once they complete three years of teaching after initial certification.

As you are browsing through our Web page, you will see our admission requirements, descriptions of the courses and programs, and information about our faculty and staff.  Our full-time and adjunct faculty are dedicated professionals who participate actively in their areas of specialty at regional, national, and international levels.  Many of them serve on editorial boards and advisory committees of professional organizations in education and are recipients of awards for excellence in teaching and service in their respective fields.  Their numerous books and journal articles attest to their fine scholarship.  The SEYS Department also boasts a first rate staff.  They provide exemplary administrative and technical support to all our programs and have received high praise for their service from faculty and students alike.

We appreciate your interest in our SEYS Department.

Yours sincerely,
