GRADUATE COURSE FOR SPRING 2005 Physics 501 Physical Science for TeachersDates: Tuesdays Times: 4:30 PM - 7:50 PM (First meeting Feb. 1, 2005) Place: Science Building, Room B241 4 Graduate Science credits Instructors: Professors Mark Miksic and Steven Schwarz Prerequisites: For high school science teachers in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science and for those preparing to become science teachers. To Register: Please contact the Physics Office (SB-B334, 718-997-3350) directly. For information: Call Mark Miksic at 718-997-3379 or mgmiksic@qc.edu. Teachers in this laboratory course for science teachers and education majors focus upon active investigative science (scientific inquiry) as a teaching tool. It will make extensive use of the personal computer and low cost sensors to carry out open ended experiments, which involve the measurement of parameters such as temperature, force, voltage, light intensity, pH, heart rate, etc. Teachers will gain experience in investigative science methodology and the analysis and presentation of scientific data. They will be asked to pursue and investigate their own science inquiry questions and will present oral and written reports to their peers. Applications to their science classrooms will be discussed throughout the course and will include an assignment to structure a science investigation for elementary or secondary school students designed to teach a particular concept by means of scientific inquiry. Experience in the use of internet resources for science, simple programming tasks, and spreadsheet use, will also be gained.
