THOMAS A. GARDNER
SCIENCE TEACHER ENDOWMENT FUND
The Thomas A. Gardner Science Teacher Endowment Fund is created
to support and advance the learning of science and of nature by
children and by the public at large, and the application of science
understanding to the hazards of modern society. The activities of the
Fund will include, but are not limited to: The annual Thomas A. Gardner
Science Teacher Award to be given to a candidate who is certified or
graduated as a Queens College science teacher in the Science Teacher
Careers Program. The award is presented at the Queens College
graduation ceremony in Spring of each year.
The recipient is expected to demonstrate:
• a deep desire to continue his/her development as a creative and
effective
teacher,
• a love of nature and living things and a desire to teach this to
others, and
• a desire to increase science understanding of the public,
especially with regards
to the hazards of modern society.
The recipient will receive a certificate of recognition at the Queens
College graduation ceremonies and a tuition scholarship of $1000
designated exclusively for their graduate studies in teacher education
at Queens College.
The Thomas A. Gardner
Science Teacher Award was given for the first time at the
June 2002 graduation to Maureen G. Smatana, a Biology teacher
graduate of the Division of Education and the Science Teacher Careers
program.
