STUDY ABROAD - - CUNY ITALY STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM
The CUNY Italy Student Exchange Program was established in 1992. It is sponsored by the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute which is under the aegis of Queens College. The Program has sent many qualified students from the various City University campuses for a semester or academic year to study at one of four Italian universities. These are the University of Catania, the University of Pavia, the University of Siena, and the University of Trento.

The Program is designed for highly motivated students who are interested in participating in Italian university life. Such an experience provides students with a valuable global perspective in this interdependent world.

Requirements:
The Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in all academic disciplines. Applicants must be full-time CUNY students in good academic standing at their home campuses, with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Because the language of instruction at the University abroad is Italian, applicants must have completed at least three semesters of Italian or its equivalent.

Credits:
Students can earn up to twelve credits per semester. They must register at their home campus for 12 permit credits per semester.

Housing:
The Italian university will provide students with shared rooms at the university residences. Although some of the residences have shared kitchen facilities on each floor, students usually prefer to eat at the University's subsidized cafeteria (amensaa) with classmates and friends. Students will pay a housing fee directly to the host university one month prior to departure. The housing fee, which is modest, will vary for each university.

Costs:
Students will be required to register and pay CUNY full time tuition to the bursar at their home campus at least one month prior to departure. At registration, students must secure an approved CUNY permit for registering in the student exchange program. Upon completing registration, students must bring to the coordinator of the exchange program a copy of this approved CUNY permit form and a copy of the bursar's receipt. (If the tuition will be covered by Financial Aid, the student may bring a letter from the bursar's office containing that information.) TAP grant, PELL grants and student loans are available to students applying to CUNY/Italy Student Exchange Program.

In addition to the CUNY full time tuition, students must pay their round-trip transportation, room, and board (approximately $1500-2000 per semester), and miscellaneous expenses (about $1500).

Application deadline:
The academic calendar at the Italian universities does not coincide with the CUNY calendar. CUNY students who wish to enroll for an academic year will take classes from October to July. (These students must apply by May 15th.) CUNY students who wish to enroll for one semester will take classes from late January to July. (These students must apply by October 15th.)
