For many college students, studying for a semester or year at the University of Paris is a life-long dream. For over fourteen years, the New York/Paris Exchange Program has been helping to make this dream come true for hundreds of students at Queens College and the other campuses of CUNY.
REQUIREMENTS This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines who are full-time CUNY students who have already spent one semester at CUNY. The program, while not limited to French majors, asks that participants have either three college-level courses in French OR the equivalent proficiency before you go.
The language of instruction in most courses taught on the program is French. For those participants with the minimum French requirements, there is the possibility of taking courses in FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. For those who have good reading and writing skills in French, there are courses available in literature, art history, cinema, photography, history, economics, sociology, philosophy, political science, women's studies, the natural sciences, and computer science.
A three-week intensive French language course is offered by the Program in September before the French university year begins. Students have the option of taking this course in Paris, or in the exquisite village of Seillans in Provence.
CREDITS Students receive elective credits for all work they complete on the program.
HOUSING Students receive help in finding two types of housing in Paris. They can be au-paires for French families, which involves 12-15 hours of service to the family -- usually in the form of offering English conversation or help with English homework to the children of such families -- in exchange for room and board. Or, they can share rented apartments in Paris with other students.
COSTS Students pay regular CUNY tuition during their semester or year abroad. They remain eligible for TAP and PELL financial aid during this time. In addition, they must pay their round-trip transportation, housing expenses, and a $50 application fee. Unless they decide to be an au-paire, food and housing costs are approximately $4,000 per semester, or $8,000 per year.
