Bachelor of Arts (BA)
The Art Department takes a wide-ranging view of contemporary art practice, offering courses in a variety of media that provide a challenging, focused approach to visual art within the context of a public, liberal arts university. Students are encouraged to develop an individual direction through an approach to media, materials, and techniques that is both disciplined and experimental. To further this end, the curriculum provides studio experiences in drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, ceramics, printmaking, photography and digital imaging. In addition, students take a number of courses in art history and are expected to become familiar with contemporary art by taking full advantage of New York City as an international art center. In their final term students complete a semester-long independent project as well as a seminar that exposes them to the issues and contexts that inform art making in today's world.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
A BFA in Studio Art gives students the opportunity to develop their ideas and working methodologies toward a more focused realization of independent studio work. In addition to the requirements for the BA, students follow a flexible program that combines seminars, advanced studio courses, independent studies and mentoring. Whether concentrating on a particular medium or combining a range of materials and processes, students are encouraged to develop a critical self-awareness about their work and to express their ideas in a manner that is meaningful and relevant to contemporary culture. A BFA is considered the best preparation for graduate-level study in studio art.
