The Land
of Our Return Diasporic Encounters with Italy Conference
The John D.
Calandra Italian American Institute’s second annual conference
addresses the theme of “return” during its three-day event. For
Virgil’s AENAS, Italy
was “the land of our return” (in Robert Fagles’ 2006
translation), the place his ancestor Dardanus left generations earlier. The Aeneid is thus an epic recounting of the Trojan hero’s
return, or nostos, to Italian soil.
This poetic conceit offers numerous possibilities to explore the political,
economic, social, and cultural impact of historical and contemporary travel
and communication by Italian emigrants and their descendants to Italy.
Italian emigration was the largest movement of free labor in world history
with over twenty-six million people emigrating from the 1870s to the 1970s.
Close to half the emigrants traveling to the Americas
returned to Italy
between 1905 and 1920. According to historian Donna
Gabaccia, “The paese
(town) had created its diaspora, but the diaspora in turn transformed the paese.” After World War II,
Italian Americans journeyed to Italy increasingly as tourists
and by the 1970s travel agencies began catering to this “ethnic
roots” market. There, Italian Americans experienced the disparity
between personal connections to an ancestral paese and the ever changing reality of the larger nation. In
recent years, a growing number of descendants of Italian emigration are
reclaiming their Italian citizenship.

“Fade
to White”: Colonial Mulattoes in cinema and Literature of Fascist Italy
With guest
speaker, Rosetta Giuliani-Caponetto, University of Connecticut.
In 2006, Italy’s
prime minister Silvio Berlusconi proclaimed, “We don’t want Italy
to become a multiethnic multicultural country. We are proud of our
traditions.” The current anti-immigrant sentiment in Italy and the popular percentage
of Italian society as homogeneously white must be examined in relation to the
Fascist era’s obsession with racial purity. Ethnic, racial, and
cultural crossings during Mussolini’s regime were marked by cinematic
and literary efforts to deny this social realty. Rosetta Giuliani-Caponetto
will discuss the perceived threat and representations of biracial children of
Italian men and African women from Italian colonies as found in 1930s popular
novels and feature films. Light refreshments will be served. Seating is
limited. This is part of the Philip V. Cannistraro Seminar Series in Italian American
Studies.

Schenone Reads from The Lost ravioli
Recipes of Hoboken:
A Search for Food and Family
In The Lost Recipes of Hoboken,
Laura Schenone undertakes a quest to retrieve her great grandmother’s
ravioli recipe. In lyrical prose and delicious recipes, Schenone takes the
reader on a journey from New Jersey’s postindustrial landscape and its
suburbs’ disposable, fast-food culture to the family’s ancestral
home on the Ligurian coast, with its pesto, smoked chestnuts, and beloved
ravioli. Schenone discovers the persistent importance of identity and place,
all the while pursuing the perfect circle of filled pasta. Light refreshments

Polizzi
Generosa, My Little Brooklyn
Camilla Roos Overbye, director. Vincent Schiavelli, the subject of this
film, was born in Bushwick, Brooklyn and raised by his grandparents,
immigrants from the town of Polizzi Generosa (Palermo province) in Sicily’s Madonie mountains.
Schiavelli was an accomplished character actor who starred in such popular
films as One Flew Over the
Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) and
Ghost (1990). He was also fluent in Sicilian and a published food writer,
having inherited his appreciation for Sicilian culture from his grandfather.
In 2003 Schiavelli moved to his ancestral town where he died in late 2005.
This film documents Schiavelli’s life in Polizzi Generosa, his
appreciation of culinary traditions, and his rapport with its townspeople.

The Land
of Our Return Diasporic Encounters with Italy Conference
The John D.
Calandra Italian American Institute’s second annual conference
addresses the theme of “return” during its three-day event. For
Virgil’s AENAS, Italy was “the land of our return” (in
Robert Fagles’ 2006 translation), the place his ancestor Dardanus left
generations earlier. The Aeneid is thus an epic recounting of
the Trojan hero’s return, or nostos,
to Italian soil. This poetic conceit offers numerous possibilities to explore
the political, economic, social, and cultural impact of historical and
contemporary travel and communication by Italian emigrants and their
descendants to Italy. Italian emigration was the largest movement of free
labor in world history with over twenty-six million people emigrating from
the 1870s to the 1970s. Close to half the emigrants traveling to the Americas
returned to Italy between 1905 and 1920. According to historian Donna Gabaccia, “The paese (town) had created its diaspora, but the diaspora in turn
transformed the paese.” After
World War II, Italian Americans journeyed to Italy increasingly as tourists
and by the 1970s travel agencies began catering to this “ethnic roots”
market. There, Italian Americans experienced the disparity between personal
connections to an ancestral paese and
the ever changing reality of the larger nation. In recent years, a growing
number of descendants of Italian emigration are reclaiming their Italian
citizenship.

“Fade
to White”: Colonial Mulattoes in cinema and Literature of Fascist Italy
With guest
speaker, Rosetta Giuliani-Caponetto, University of Connecticut.
In 2006, Italy’s
prime minister Silvio Berlusconi proclaimed, “We don’t want Italy to
become a multiethnic multicultural country. We are proud of our
traditions.” The current anti-immigrant sentiment in Italy and the
popular percentage of Italian society as homogeneously white must be examined
in relation to the Fascist era’s obsession with racial purity. Ethnic,
racial, and cultural crossings during Mussolini’s regime were marked by
cinematic and literary efforts to deny this social realty. Rosetta
Giuliani-Caponetto will discuss the perceived threat and representations of
biracial children of Italian men and African women from Italian colonies as
found in 1930s popular novels and feature films. Light refreshments will be
served. Seating is limited. This is part of the Philip V. Cannistraro Seminar
Series in Italian American Studies.
