Italian Heritage and Culture Month booklet (8 megs pdf)Italian/American Digital ProjectBook SaleWelcome to the Calandra
Institute
Greetings! Welcome to the home page of the John
D. Calandra Italian American Institute! As I complete the first year of my
tenure as Dean, I continue to admire the work that the Institute has done over
these past two-plus decades, especially those activities and exhibitions that
the staff has organized, coordinated, and curated, as many of us subsequently
benefited from their hard work. The
plethora of demographic and historical studies, together with the numerous
symposia that have examined an array of Italian-American cultural practices
and products, continues to speak volumes about the Italian-American
experience. To be sure, much still needs to be done, and our future
activities will continue to explore the various sectors of our greater
community as we move forward. This said, we will ensure that much of what we
produce in the way of research and scholarship eventually sees the light of
day in venues such as journals and books, as well as being available in PDF
formats on our own website. In
addition, the Institute continues to engage in its more local activities such
as the research and analysis of the Italian-American experience both within
The City University of New York as well as across the academic communities at
large. I am also hopeful that the Institute will serve as a kind of
“punto di ritrovo,” as we say in Italian, a meeting place for our
CUNY paesani: Italians, Italian
Americans, and all others interested in things “Italian”! One current
attraction at the Institute is the This
website ultimately brings together, in one place, information about our
Institute’s activities and initiatives as well as those of other
organizations within the greater Italian-American community. As we move
forward during what is still a period of transition, you will notice changes
here on our website that, I feel confident, will continue to serve us all in
disseminating the information on what is being done vis-à-vis Italian
Americans here, there, and everywhere! We look
forward to welcoming you to any and all of our unique cultural and historical
programs. Con i miei più cordiali
saluti,
Anthony Julian Tamburri Dean
& Professor
