This course will attempt to reconstruct the history of Italian immigration to the United States by examining not only the external factors affecting southern Italian immigrants, but also more importantly the internal factors that informed their experience. By exploring topics such as radical politics, labor, family, religion, culture, race, Fascism, stereotypes and identity, a more complex and multifaceted historical depiction of the Italian immigrant experience in America will emerge. To survive and to appeal to the mass market, literature and modern fiction has incorporated these genres to become something different than its Nineteenth Century predecessor. This course intends to explore the encounter between literature and the media to analyze their evolution together.
