Library The Calandra Institute’s non-lending research library contains books, journals, magazines, and newspapers pertaining to Italian American history and culture. The library also has items on Italy, Italian culture, politics, economics, literature, etc. that pertain to Italian Americans and the Italian diaspora. The Calandra library is open to scholars and qualified students.The Calandra library houses the Saraceno collection, a generous gift from the private collection of the late Pietro Saraceno, a professor of administrative history at the University of Rome. The collection focuses on Italian history and administration. This significant donation includes an extensive series of reference works, old and rare volumes from as early as the 18th century, and entire runs of scholarly periodicals and journals some dating to the 1800s. Among the many unique items in the collection are the hundreds of volumes representing the complete Legge e Decreti (laws and decrees) for the Kingdom of Italy as well as for the Italian states before unification. The Sarceno collection is not open to the public at this time. We are currently in the process of making the collection available. The library is open to the public by appointment only. Please contact the Institute at (212) 642-2094.Archive The Calandra Institute’s archive was created with gift of over 200 photographs, maps, and other artifacts from the estate of the late Bernard Titowsky, a used book dealer who specialized in ethnic studies. The Titowsky donation was followed with 40 lenders to the Institute’s exhibition, “The Italians of New York”; donating approximately 360 objects to the archive. These objects range from Italian passports to historical photographs, from shovels used to build the New York City subways to ceremonial sashes worn by members of lay religious mutual aid societies. We also received fifteen plaster pieces by sculptor Onorio Ruotolo (1888-1966), co-founder of the Leonardo Da Vinci Art School in 1923. The archive is not open to the public at this time.
