The Cultures of Migration
The John D. Calandra Italian American
Institute was co-sponsor with Dartmouth
College of this two-day conference
held in Hanover, NH. The weekend was dedicated to papers on
all aspects of Italian migration. This included both the historical exodus of
the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to all parts of the world,
and the more recent migration that is taking place from Eastern Europe and
Africa, especially, to Italy.

Fifth-Italo-American Social Science Conference
Concerns about terrorism, economic
stability, interethnic conflicts, and maintaining a national identity and
culture in the face of global homogenization were among the topics that will
be explored at the fifth Italo-American Conference to be held at William
Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., on May 17 and 18 and at the John D.
Calandra Italian American Institute at Queens College, CUNY, on Saturday, May
19. 2007. The conference, “Uncertainty and Insecurity in the New
Age,” offered an opportunity for leading Italian and Italian American
social scientists, among them young scholars from Italy
and the United States
,
to exchange ideas on the economic, educational and political impact of these
global issues. [PDF]
Poetry Fest
On April 14, 2007, close to thirty
Italian/American poets gathered at the John D. Calandra Italian American
Institute in order to celebrate Poetry Month’s tenth-year anniversary.
There was a special tribute to Joseph Tusiani, whose poetry appears in four
different languages: English, Italian, his native dialect, and Latin. Also
celebrated at this event was Alfredo de Palchi, poet, long-standing editor
and publisher, and generous benefactor.[PDF]
