ITALICS

THE ITALIAN AMERICAN MAGAZINE

Our October Edition of ITALICS features two authors: Italian Journalist Roberto Saviano, whose “Gomorrah”, is an internationally acclaimed expose on the Neapolitan Mafia, and The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of The House of Representatives, who has written a new book entitled, “Know Your Power: A Message to the Daughters of America”.

New York, October 29th, 2008  - ITALICS, The Italian American Magazine, hosted by Anthony J. Tamburri, premieres on Wednesday, October 29th, 2008. ITALICS can also be seen Saturday, November 1st, at 8pm, & on Sunday, November 2nd, at 10am on CUNY-TV, Ch.75 in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, & The Bronx.

First, ITALICS takes you to the Pen World Voices Conference featuring Roberto Saviano, award winning Journalist and Author of “Gomorrah”. Released in 2006, “Gomorrah” is an internationally acclaimed expose on the traditions and business practices of the Neapolitan Mafia, known as “Camorra” in Italian. The Book has been translated into over 30 languages. Mr. Saviano, 29, is a lifelong resident of Naples, Italy.  The book’s revelations led to investigations by Italian Magistrates into mafia corruption and businesses, with subsequent trials, convictions, and jail time for many Neapolitan Crime Lords. A sad by-product of his work has been the many death threats issued by the Camorra against Saviano, and his need for 24 Hour Police Protection. A film version of “Gomorrah”, by Italian Director Matteo Garrone, has been released in 2008 and has also met with great International acclaim and plaudits. Once again the publicity from the success and popularity of the Film and renewed interest in the book has led to renewed murmurs of death threats from the Neapolitan mafia underground.  On October 20, 2008, 6 Noble Prize Recipients including Rev. Desmond Tutu, Mikhail Gorbachev, Dario Fo, and Gunter Grass among others, called for the Italian Government to take the threat seriously and preserve Mr.Saviano life and work at all costs.

Next, we join ITALICS in Washington DC to attend a Press Conference, and Book Signing, with the Honorable Nancy J. Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives. Speaker Pelosi’s new book “Know Your Power: A Message to The Daughters of America” has just been published. In the book the Speaker reveals her early childhood in her Italian American family and growing up in politics in Baltimore, Maryland. The Speaker also uses the book as a forum to empower the young women in the United States today to aspire to not only family but country and career.
