A Message from the Chair

Comparative Literature is a wonderful window and connection to people, cultures, ideas, current questions, concerns, trends, societies and histories as expressed in words. Literature, essays, biographies and autobiographies, film, the visual arts and music are among the materials we make use of. Comparative Literature calls upon works from around the world, from conventional and experimental forms, from many languages, and from all time periods of human expression. Classes encourage critical thinking, assessment and reassessment of ideas, and the pleasure of precise expression through writing and discussion. Comparative Literature is an excellent Liberal Arts major, and an excellent way to approach reading and writing from around the globe, from classics to the brand new.
