Nora Teikmanis

Nora Teikmanis is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Comparative Literature and European Languages and Literatures. She holds a B.A. in English from Vassar College and an M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Boston University. In Februrary 2003, she received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, having completed a dissertation entitled “Virtue and the Renunciation of Violence in the Fiction of Dostoevsky and his European Contemporaries.” In the dissertation, Dr. Teikmanis explores novelistic treatments of self-giving love while she re-evaluates the mimetic theory of René Girard. The dissertation is being revised for publication. Bilingual in Latvian and English, Dr. Teikmanis also reads Russian, Spanish, French, and Latin. She teaches courses in Russian literature, the European novel, children’s literature, and “Great Books.” Her teaching often focuses on questions of human conflict and cultural formation. She has won the President's Award for Teaching at Queens College for 2005.
