June 24 | Sunset Boulevard
1950 111m b&w |
Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Erich von Stroheim, Cecil B. DeMille; One of Wilder's finest and certainly the darkest of all Hollywood self-examinations. This is a tale of humiliation, exploitation and dashed dreams. Deliriously dark and nightmarish film noir. |
July 1 | Stalag 17
1953 120m b&w
|
William Holden, Neville Brand, Otto Preminger, Sig Ruman; Based on a successful Broadway play and forerunner to TV series like Hogan's Heroes and Sergeant Bilko. A POW film loaded with crosscurrents of emotion. |
July 8 | Sabrina
1954 114m b&w |
Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, Francis X. Bushman; A Cinderella story which gets turned on its head. A satire about breaking down class, emotional and age barriers. |
July 15 | Some Like it Hot
1959 121m b&w |
Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, Marilyn Monroe, Joe E. Brown, Nehemiah Persoff; Curtis and Lemon play jazz musicians on the run after witnessing a St. Valentine's Day massacre. One of the early cross-dressing films and sporting a great closing line. Remember? |
July 22 | The Apartment
1960 125m b&w |
Jack Lemon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray, Edie Adams; Superb comedy-drama that embraces both sentiment and cynicism. Oscar winner for best picture and later a Broadway musical, Promises, Promises. |
July 24
*** Thursday |
The Fortune Cookie
1966 125m b&w |
Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau, Judi West; Also known as Meet Whiplash Willy. The friction between the laughs and the cynicism makes for extraordinarily hot comedy. Matthau earned an easy Oscar. |
