Queens College is pleased to announce the
TIME-2000 Project, an undergraduate program specially designed
for prospective secondary school mathematics teachers.
The Project will admit 35 members of the fall 1999 freshman class.

2. Print or type
all information requested in Sections 1 through 4 of the attached
application completely and accurately. Then mail the application
to the TIME 2000 project.
3. A letter must
be written by your mathematics teacher or chair verifying your
competency in mathematics and noting the reasons for recommending
you as a prospective mathematics teacher. This letter of recommendation
should include your name and address and it should be written on school
stationery. It should be sent, under separate cover, to the TIME
2000 project.
TIME-2000 Project
All applications for the TIME-2000
Project should be received by March 1, 1999. (Late applications will
be accepted. Admittance will be determined on a first-come, first-serve basis.)
Applicants
will be notified of their acceptance to the TIME-2000 Project by
April 30, 1999. Late applicants will be notified in a timely fashion.

Project Staff
In the operation of the program
and in selecting individuals for participation in, and
for administration of, the program, Queens College will not

Answers to optional questions on the
application form are collected to meet research and federal
reporting requirements. Such answers are confidential and will
not be released except in the form of statistical summaries in
which individuals are not identified. Response is entirely voluntary.
Such information has no bearing on either admissions or academic
decisions.
The Teaching
Improvement through
Mathematics Education ( TIME ) Project will prepare prospective
secondary school mathematics teachers for the 21st century by
engaging them in activities that will increase their knowledge
and appreciation of:
Course Work
All participants
will be enrolled in mathematics and education courses at Queens
College. The courses comprising this interdisciplinary program
center around mathematics, the learning of mathematics, and the
teaching of mathematics. Students will investigate the relation
between ideas in college-level mathematics and the school
mathematics curriculum. They will also relate their own experiences
in learning mathematics to current theories of learning and
motivation.
Participants will meet with Project staff on a regular basis
to share learning experiences and to clarify ideas. Staff will
also be available for individual conferences as needed.
The TIME-2000 Project will provide
graphing calculators, textbooks and other materials
for all Project-related courses (maximum of 5 courses).
High school seniors graduating in June 1999
are eligible to apply. Applicants should have received a grade of
at least B in each high school mathematics course, have a cumulative
grade-point average of at least B, and have taken four years of high
school mathematics. They also should have a special interest in and
a commitment to the teaching of mathematics, and should be highly
recommended by their mathematics teacher or chair.
