Suggested Course Sequence
BA with Music Education
The following is intended as a guide to the music education program, as a guide to help you know which music courses you should be taking simultaneously. Your program may vary. Questions can be directed to the undergraduate coordinator.
Preliminary Semester
This semester is for students not yet in the sequence. Students are placed in Basic Musicianship courses on the basis of the Qualifying Examination. Students who are not able to start the major sequence at once should try to take liberal arts or other non-music courses which may be difficult to manage later.
- Music 71: Sight Singing and Ear Training (2 hours/1 credit).
- Music 73: Theory (2 hours/1 credit).
- Music 74: Keyboard Techniques (2 hours/1 credit).
- Music 1: Introduction to Music (recommended, not required; 3 hours/3 credits).
- Performance Group (assigned by the School) (1-5 hours/1 credit).
Semester 1
- Music 100: Recital Attendance.
- Music 171: Sight Singing and Dictation 1 (2 class hours, 1 lab; 2 credits).
- Music 173: Harmony, Counterpoint and Keyboard Skills 1 (3 hours/3 credits).
- Major Ensemble (assigned by the School).

- Students are encouraged to declare music education as their major and meet with the music education faculty.
- No music education courses can be taken until Introduction to Music Education has been completed typically in semester 3.
Semester 2
