Daniel Krekeler holds a Masters Degree in Orchestral Performance of double bass from Manhattan School of Music, May 2004; he also received a master’s degree in double bass performance from Yale School of Music in 1999 and a bachelor’s degree in double bass performance from Indiana University in May 1997. His teachers have included Timothy Cobb, principal bassist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; Leigh Mesh, Associate Principal Bassist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; Peter Lloyd, Former Principal Bassist, Minnesota Orchestra; Donald Palma, and Lawrence Hurst. In the fall of 2003, he participated in a master class with Ed Barker, principal double bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has also participated in a master class with Hal Robinson, principal double bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra. At the age of 17, he began his professional training studying with Peter Lloyd and while attending Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota.
Prior to being awarded the position of Section Double Bass with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in May 2005, Daniel was subbing with the Minnesota Orchestra for several consecutive months. He has held positions with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, The Albany Symphony, the Sarasota Opera Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He won his very first position in an orchestra at age nineteen when he became a member of the bass section of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra in Indiana. He also played with the Evansville Philharmonic and Owensburo Symphony Orchestra while attending school in Indiana.
Daniel also has had several endeavors in chamber music which include a performance with the Tokyo String Quartet and several performances of Mozart’s “Per Questa Bella Mono”. He had to opportunity to perform a conductor-less performance of Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire du Soldat” in close proximity to where the piece had its world premier.
He also enjoys an active teaching studio at the Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music. At the school, he has started a bass studio class which includes bass sectionals and master classes.
In the summers of 2001 - 2004, Daniel participated in the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra in Verbier, Switzerland as a member of their orchestra. The orchestra is resident at the annual Verbier Festival and Academy and tours internationally. During his tenure with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, he toured major European and Asian cities with some of world’s leading conductors.
In April 2004, Daniel was chosen to participate in an internship with the Berlin Philharmonic during the Salzburg Easter Festival. Studying with the Berlin Philharmonic for ten days, students had access to all rehearsals and concerts, master classes, meetings with conductors and soloists, as well as visits to the Festspielhaus and its workshops.
