INTRODUCTION TO GLOBE

What is the Queens College GLOBE initiative?

  • Queens College has become a GLOBE training partner, the only one in southern New York State.

  • The College has undertaken the responsibility of informing New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, and southern Westchester teachers about GLOBE and training them in GLOBE scientific protocols and data entry/retrieval procedures.

  • GLOBE training will eventually be offered to all public, parochial, and private schools in the metropolitan area.

  • To provide the continuing support after training that has made GLOBE successful elsewhere, the College will:

    • Create a GLOBE office on campus to respond to inquiries and coordinate recruitment, training, and local support efforts.

    • Open a GLOBE Hotline to respond to requests for help from teachers— accessible by both telephone and the Internet.

    • Distribute a GLOBE newsletter to all public, parochial, and private schools in the New York metropolitan area

    • Offer GLOBE workshops to provide scientific content assistance to teachers, schools, and school districts that request it.

    • Sponsor conferences to address implementation and other pedagogic issues

    • Sponsor GLOBE science conferences for teachers and their pupils to analyze results of data collection. Example: a microclimate conference for New York City based on GLOBE atmosphere protocols.

    • Lend specialized instruments and other equipment

    • Create a regional network of affiliated institutions and agencies to assist teachers in implementing GLOBE in their classes.

  • Queens College will incorporate GLOBE training in its pre-service teacher preparation courses so that graduates of our Elementary, Intermediate, and High School programs will start their teaching careers prepared to participate fully in any GLOBE school and to bring GLOBE to any non-GLOBE school at which they may be hired.

  • Queens College will work with NY teachers, science coordinators, and GLOBE headquarters to adapt standard GLOBE protocols to the urban environment.
