BACHELOR OF ARTS IN BIOLOGY-EDUCATION
WITH SEYS MINOR

The following information is provided by the Department of Biology of Queens College.

 
If you are interested in entering the Biology-Secondary Education Program, you must consult with the Biology-Education Advisor (Dr. Jon Sperling) and file an approved concentration plan with the Biology department.

REQUIRED BIOLOGY CORE (14 cr.)*
Bio 107 – General Biology: Life Forms and Ecosystems (4 cr.)
Bio 108 – General Biology: Physiology and Cell Biology (4 cr.)
Bio 285 – Principles of Genetics (3 cr.)
Bio 286 – Principles of Cell Biology (3 cr.)

BIOLOGY ELECTIVES (16 cr. total, of which at least 2 must be 300-level courses and 3 must be laboratory courses)*. It is recommended that these be chosen so that one or more courses are taken in each of the following 4 categories:
  1. Bio 210 – Lower Plants
    Bio 212 – Higher Plants
    Bio 213 – Field Botany
     

  2. Bio 220 – Invertebrate Zoology
    Bio 226 – Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy
    Bio 321 – Entomology
  1. Bio 340 – General Ecology
    Bio 343 – Plant Ecology
    Bio 345 – Animal Behavior
    Bio 346 – Limnology

  2. Bio 365 – Development
    Bio 372 – Vertebrate Physiology
     

COGNATE SCIENCES (16 cr. total, to include one year of Chemistry & Math 141 or 151)
Chem 019 – Basic Chemistry (4 cr.)
Chem 159 – Basic Organic Chemistry (4 cr.)
Math 141 or 151 – Calculus (3 or 4 cr.)
It is recommended that the remaining 4 - 5 credits be chosen from among the following courses: Chem 179; Environmental Sciences 111, 112; Family, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences 263, 264; Geology 100, 102; Math 152; Physics 121, 122, or equivalents.

SEYS 372.2 (Co-req: SEYS 350 & 362) — Practicum in Science – MS/JHS (2 cr.)
Spring Semester Only:
SEYS 372.4 – Student Teaching (4 cr.)**
SEYS 382 (Co-req: SEYS 372.4) — Curriculum and Assessment in Science Teaching (3 cr.)

* Students may not have a biology course with a grade below C- credited toward their departmental major requirements.

** The pre-requisite for SEYS 372 is: "A grade of 2.75 in the major and a 3.0 average in SEYS 201, 221, 340, and 350, and completion of all incompletes in the major and in education courses."
