Professional Development in Science Inquiry
for High School Science Teachers

GTLS, Group for the Teaching and Learning of Science, Beginning Friday, September 10th at the Queens HS of Teaching (QHST), and Continuing Meetings through May 2005 [Next Meeting is Tues, Nov 2, 2004]:

This is to confirm that on Friday, Sept 10th, Science Teacher Careers of Queens College will be providing an opportunity to selected HS science teachers in Regions 3&5 for Professional Development (PD) in science inquiry (SI) methodology as applied to HS science teaching.

Time: 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Place: Queens HS of Teaching

Lecture Presentation: "Science at the Nanoscale" by Dr. Monica Plisch, Director of CIPT,Cornell University.
Science Inquiry Lab: Nanotechnology, Molecular Imaging Simulation.
Facilitators: Dr. Mark Miksic and Karim Gangji of Queens College.

We are planning, over the 2004-2005 academic year, a comprehensive SI PD Workshop-Seminar for 24 in-service HS science teachers, GTLS, Group for the Teaching and Learning of Science; a pilot program which will combine teacher workshops, classroom applications, collaborative development of science inquiry lesson plans and their introduction to students in their HS classes, refinement of lesson plans with review and analysis of students' work and successive revisions.

The products of this Workshop Seminar will be: 1) The intensive PD of science teachers in SI and its applications to HS science teaching; 2) The development of mentor teachers skilled in SI and the PD of other science teacher peers; 3) a series of SI lesson plans in HS Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics, classroom-tested during this one year course.

Workshop PD Seminar in Science Inquiry for GTLS science teachers:
Invited participants are 7 teachers each from the Queens HS of Teaching (QHST), FK Lane HS, and Martin Van Buren HS and 3 teachers from the HS for Law Enforcement and Public Safety; a total of 24 science teachers of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics.

Collaboration with the Center for Nanoscale Systems (CNS):
The PD workshops will make use of creative lab modules developed by the CIPT at Cornell University, directed by Dr. Monica Plisch. The laboratory modules will be used to design laboratory inquiry investigations for HS students in all the sciences; Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics. On September 10th, the Inquiry Lab will be "Nanotechnology: Molecular Imaging Simulation."

Laboratory modules to each High School will be made available to the participating teachers; enough to provide for at least one full HS science class of 32 students. However, to make this happen, we will need funds from NYC DOE PD funds.

For the GTLS Workshop Seminar Course we need science teachers with the following backgrounds?
1. HS science teachers of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics will be welcome.
2. We need, especially, teachers who will be likely to register for a special Queens College science graduate course which will meet from Sept 10, 2004 through May 2005. This Group of 24 science teachers GTLS will be offered enrollment in a four-credit QC graduate science course, applicable toward their MS in Education. The course will apply all of the PD workshop hours from Sept 2004 to May 2005 and some additional hours toward the course requirements to earn four graduate science credits at Queens College.
