Paris Through the Eyes of Travelers
Course conducted in English
Some of the finest (but least-read) literature in the English language has been written by travelers
as they explore the world. In this course, you will have the opportunity to deepen and enrich your exploration of one of the world's great cities, Paris,
by reading and discussing literary texts set in, or written about, the historic European center of art, culture and romanace.
Living in the place you are reading about will make the texts come alive; reading about the places you are exploring will make your experience of those
places much more exciting and meaningful. "Eyes-and-ears-on" writing assignments and visits to sites described in the texts will help you to discover the true
joy and challenges inherent in traveling, in which, as Jack Kerouac said “You always learn something and learn to change your thoughts.”
Through assigned journal entries and writing assignments, you will also have the chance to add your own voice, your own thoughts and impressions,
to the existing body of travel literature about Paris.

Rome: A Portrait in Film and Literature
Conducted in English
Rome… at once the ancient capital of an empire and modern capital of the world… seat of the Catholic Church
surrounded by temples and monuments to the Roman gods… a city with thousands of years of history living and
breathing in its aqueducts and abutting buildings, compressed and bound together, creating a unique mosaic in
some kind of cohesive whole… What more intriguing and mysterious locale to inspire writers. In this
writing-based, thematic course, we will explore the character of the “place” of Rome as we walk its physical
and temporal landscape. We’ll dive into relevant American and British literature and film inspired by or
situated in the city of Rome. For instance, we’ll read Bryon, Shelley, and Keats on the Spanish Steps, then
cross the street to the imaginary café (near the actual Café Greco, where the Romantic Poets held court) where
Tom Ripley played his cat and mouse game in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Or to Edith Wharton’s “Roman Fever”, and
then watch Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. We’ll consider Mark Twain’s impressions of Rome
then juxtapose to Ernest Hemingway’s. We’ll cruise the catacombs of Rome with the Vampire Lestat, and more!
Ultimately, through writing, each student will construct their own sense of Rome, its place, its mystery, its
secrets, its nightmares and dreams. To ground this course, we must first establish an historical and cultural
context for when and how and Rome came to be, from the former capital of an Empire to the epicenter of
Catholicism and a European and world capital in its own right. You will also be introduced to some rudiments
of Italian language, custom, and cuisine. Consider this a culture component of the program.

Traditional Music in Ireland

be introduced to the transcultural journey of Irish music, song and dance during the last two centuries.
Particular attention will be given to the impact of famine and emigration on Ireland’s musical heritage. The
course will also examine the politics of music and song associated with the Land War and Home Rule movement of
the late 19th century, as well as the foundation of major cultural nationalist organisations including The
Gaelic Athletic Association, The Gaelic League, and Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann. The course will culminate
with a critique of the recent globalization of Irish traditional music culture, which has been fueled by
transnational phenomena such as Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.

Mythology and Heroic Literature
Conducted in English
Through cross-disciplinary and comparative approach of classical and pre-classical Greek mythology, this
course will follow the evolution of the hero and the constant redefinition of traditional heroic values as
dictated by the socio-political demands of the on-going civilizing process. A closer study of this change
will gain insight into the phenomenon of the culture’s continued manipulation of its myths aimed at serving
its own purposes and resulting in determining its social progress and self-image. Among the texts we will be
reading are Hesiod’s Theogony and Five Ages of Man, selected books from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Virgil’s
Aeneid, Canto XXV from Dante’s Inferno, and various shorter texts including poems and related critical articles.

Athens Seminar in Drama
Conducted in English
Drama 397
(Crosslisted with Comp Lit 335)
Seminar in Drama (3 credits) Acting Projects Drama (3 credits) European Languages and Literatures (1 credit)
This course looks at how Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles inspired The
Rest of Oedipus by Robert Montgomery. We will study theater’s great beginnings in the world
around Athens, how it served the community, and then compare this with our own purposes in
theatre. Field trips to the classic theatres in the area will be an indigenous part of our search for
the modern relevance of the ancient Athenian genius. In class, we will study the differences and
similarities between Oedipus at Colonus and The Rest of Oedipus – in story and structure, in
purpose and effect, and in its use of music and the Chorus. Students will discuss and try their
own hands at the process of adapting and being inspired from the classic text – in dialogue as
well as choral lyric. Professor Constance Tagopoulos of Indianapolis University in Athens will
read portions of Oedipus at Colonus in its original Greek, for us all to hear the original music
Sophocles still sings today. Major themes of The Rest of Oedipus – inspiration, attention, the
dramatic action of “sitting” meditation – will be explored in the text as well as with some theatre exercises.
