25% Writing and library assignments
Students must complete weekly reading, library, and writing assignments and actively participate in class in order to gain familiarity with the resources and practice writing about and discussing ideas encountered in readings and research.

25% Journal
A career of scholarship requires cultivating the habit of continuous reading of scholarly writing in the field and critical response to that reading. Every student will therefore be required to keep a journal of summaries and responses to weekly readings from scholarly music literature.
Weekly journal entries are due at the beginning of each class period.

Scholars regularly review books for various music journals, generally with strict writing and editorial rules and word limits. Students will select a book and follow specific review guidelines.

40% Proposal & Annotated Bibliography (5%), Presentation (15%), & Paper (20%)
Research scholars must be able to apply the various available resources to specific projects and to present research in correct scholarly form. Each student music therefore write and present a research project on a subject in the field of musicology or music theory, discussing and utilizing a variety of resources and methodologies.
